The Orange County United Way executive Maria Chavez Wilcox saw her compensation drop to $251,446 from the previous year’s $256,083, a drop of nearly 2 percent, according to tax returns.
The nonprofit’s revenues were down about 13 percent over the same period, and it cut in many areas, officials said.
Chavez Wilcox manages a $23.1 million organization, which is one of the largest charities in Orange County. She earns less than than head Orange County Boy Scouts leader Les Baron, who got $280,264 to manage an organization half the size of United Way ($10.8 million).
The United Way’s most well-paid consultant was Robert Beatty, a nonprofit financial consultant in Carlsbad, who was paid $207,225.
Colleen Sandrin, former executive vice president, earned $139,388.

Good! Just a thought, How much does the President of the United States get paid? What is the requirements to earn more than the President of the United States?
Oh poor maria!!!! You unfortunate soul!!! A $6000 dollar hit off your $256k salary!!! How do you survive dear??? Please, give us your mailing address so that we can send you some charity.
THIS IS EXACTLY THE REASON I WOULD NOT GIVE A THIN DIME TO THESE HEISTERS!!!! I REFUSE TO HELP PAY MARIA’S FAT SALARY!!!!
I hope United Way’s revenues drop to $ZERO$ and it goes bankrupt so Maria is forced to look for other gainful employment in which her salary isn’t dependent on charity!!!!
People are becoming more aware of the salary cons going on at United Ways across the country. OCUW raises no more than it did 20 years ago, as people gradually figure out this outfit is all about overpaid hangers on.
Give direct to your favorite charity and bypass this wasteful dinosaur of a middleman organization
OCUW Board should all resign for approving pay and consultant fees at this level. Something smells really fishy.
Sick and to think she never does a thing with the partners the org supports. the people i feel awful for are her staff who deal with her…they are the ones who deserve the pay cause they do the work.
I surmise that Maria has the right connections to land such a fat salary paid with charitable contributions and that competence has nothing to do with it. Basically, we are talking a political appointment. That’s my guess.
The solution????
STARVE THE BEAST!!!!! DON’T GIVE A THIN DIME TO UNITED WAY!!!
