Trinity Broadcasting’s jet plane: Nearer, My God, to Thee!

These extraordinary long- and ultra long-range business aircraft incorporate their advanced technologies with an uncommon elegance and synergy, while their handling ability is legendary - the fusion of grace and power.”
It’s logical that fusing grace and power would be high on the list for the world’s largest religious broadcaster, OC’s own Trinity Broadcasting Network. A shot of Trinity’s graceful, powerful plane was snapped earlier this year by photographer Michael D. Davis, who captioned it this way:
Paul and Jan Crouch’s personal chariot awaits their return on the ramp at Nashville. Lord, literally, only knows what they are doing here. Well, they do have their massive “Trinity City” just 
north of town where Conway Twitty used to live. TV Studios, Performance Hall’s, Offices, and even a Gift Shop are all located on the grounds. Amen.
The aircraft is owned by a Trinity affiliate - Trinity Broadcasting of Florida, Inc. It was built in 2000, and was registered to Trinity with the Federal Aviation Administration on May 15, 2008. Its price tag runs some $26 million.
Trinity spent $332,237 on pilots, according to Trinity of Florida’s last federal tax return (posted on guidestar.org):
- Martin Aviation of Santa Ana, which was paid $140,002,
- John Hylton Jr. of Seattle, who was paid $100,572,
- and Flightsong of Seattle, which was paid $91,663.
So, why does a nonprofit religious broadcasting company need an uber-jet?
We put that question to Trinity attorney and spokesman John Casoria (who we thank for not immediately hanging up on us). Casoria was not especially chatty, but he did let us prattle on about what we expected was its reasoning - Because Trinity is a global operation with broadcasting outlets all over the world? - and he was good enough to confirm that that was, indeed, the case.
The jet is not a new thing, Casoria said - Trinity has had one for about 20 years.
Trinity’s reach is truly awesome. In addition to broadcasting into most every American home, it arrives via satellite on TVs in Russia, Spain, Portugal, the Middle East, Central Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific, Southeast Asia, Taiwan, India, Indonesia, Brazil, and, oh, many more places. It even broadcasts in Arabic and Farsi. It produces films, owns theme parks in Florida and Tennessee, and and owns dozens of homes.

Trinity Christian Center of Santa Ana - which runs Trinity Broadcasting had revenues of $195.8 million, expenses of $179.3 million, and net assets of $861 million, according to the most recent tax returns filed by the nonprofit (tbn). Picking on churches now? Religious freedoms are protected by the constitution, and Trinity is in full compliance with the law. I believe they are Christian and not taking vows of poverty so if they can why shouldn’t they. Not sure if you noticed but the congregation is across from South coast plaza near Bloomingdales. Saks and Nordstroms among others, perhaps the flock is not fond of flying coach either. I would expect no less from a high end church, just as a slum church in the 909 or LA would likely posses a clunky old van with oil leaks. For another comparison one can get a similar B.A. degree from ITT tech or say Harvard, regardless you must work to earn it, nothing in life is free.
Churches are businesses. Churches should be taxed like every other business.
There was an article in the LA Times a couple of years ago about the several mansions they own, around the time a male had accused Paul in a sex scandal. What ever became of that?

Agreed. 100%. But being tax-exempt is not a Constitutionally-protected right. All organizations should be subject to local taxation laws. If they don’t want to pay taxes, then they just have to spend as much as they bring in. Then their taxable income would be $0.

What’s the difference between a for-profit organization’s CEO making $1,000,000 a year and a non-profit organization’s CEO making $1,000,000 a year? It’s easier for the non-profit organization’s CEO–who also happens to usually be the founder–to make that type of salary.

They aren’t a church. They are religious broadcasters. To my knowledge they don’t have church services there. The article does say they are listed as non-profit religious broadcasters. Not sure how they determine profit. Usually groups of that size may have for-profit taxable portions if they are making profits separate from the non-profit portion. Not sure just how that works.
This is definitely not typical of Christian broadcasters. There are several international Christian broadcasting networks where the workers are missionaries and live modest life styles.
They do not seem to be following in the footsteps of the New Testament leaders of the church. While some of them were people of means, others like the apostle Paul earned his own living making tents as he was traveling on his ministry trips.
They say they are a broadcast network, no particular religion thus no church. They own corporations internationally, albiet non-profit corporations I suppose. I wonder if their financials statements are fully consolidated with all international businesses and assets rolled in. Our US dollars left the country to be invested in foreign countries.
I feel they need it especially as they have gotton older they have done their service of a life time. Why not a jet to do the Lord’s work in these very fast times of travel. What does the world want to do put them on a milk cart to spread the gospel. Unreal, the pettiness they have worked themselves to the bone for so many long years. I have been with them since the shower curtain days. The word says its not good to muzzle the Ox when its treading out the grain. They have worked like worker bees and Oxen for the Lord all these many years. I know our Jesus will say to the both of them when they go home “Well done my good and faithful servants”…if anyone wants to beef over the jet tell them to take a good look at the history of all the hard work they are worthy of pay and also a jet.

I have been telling me wife and kids for years that the HQ in CM is actually heaven. So the other day our fish died and when one of the little ones asked where it went, Mommy said “It went to heaven”. So the little one replied “Maybe we can go visit her and also catch a movie at Metro Pointe while we’re there, it’s right across the street.”
Conveniently located so close to South Coast Plaza. You can really see which business makes the most money. Certainly tax free 33% right off the top helps.

It is for all of you who claim to be Christians to gather up collectively and warn those who donate to these two snake-oil salesmen, or liars, to simply, stop it. Create a “good-church” seal or a “better church association” to those faith-based organization that agree to being audited and can show how the money they collect is used “for the Lord”, not to line someones pockets. Create a list of organizations based upon how much of their donations are spent in support of your religion in some way). It won’t happen because all of you will simply choose pretend you can do nothing about it and decide to let your God sort it out on judgment day. Fueling and maintaining a jet is an enormous expense. Better off to fly commercial, much more cost effective.
For laughs I’ll occasionally tune into the religious broadcasts on cable TV. The ones with the roundtable discussions. If I turn the sound down the characters remind me of a bunch of used car dealers in cheap suits and brothel managers. I often wonder who would send their hard-earned money to those cast of characters? Americans are easily bamboozled. Look at who they elect to political office. It’s pretty obvious to me that our education system is totally broken.
I remember reading an article recently that indicated that a big share of their money comes from developing countries. These people take advantage of some of the most desperate and down-trodden people. Despicable.

Being someone who believes in Jesus Christ now for many years, I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why they would need such a jet. I could understand an airplane that would ferry food, clothing and other essentials to the poor and hurting across the globe, but this looks like and is a luxury business jet… This is just wrong….. probably 10-20 airplanes that would fly “in the bush” could have been purchased for $ 26m to help the poor and the hurting in countries world wide that suffer so much from disease, typhoons, food shortages, tsunami’s etc…. By the way, I think it is great that this story is covered under the “OC Watchdog: Your tax dollars at work” banner. Think about this:
One man’s tax break is another man’s burden. If this “church” was taxed like the rest of us, they probably would not be able to afford this luxury item. However, when this “church” is not taxed, then the additional tax revenue has to come from those of us that pay. So we pay our taxes to the government and the government then takes our money and indirectly gives it to these “churches” in the form of tax breaks so that they can buy jet airplanes.

CPA, you are right on the mark. I have been of the opinion for many years that there should be no tax-exempt organizations whatsoever. If one wants to support a charity.then do so out of one’s convictions, not because of tax benefits. This disgust me on so many levels. First, how stupid are Americans to send these people money. Did not anyone learn from the Jim and Tammy show? Second, if Jesus was here now, he would tell them to their phony faces that they are doing the exact opposite of his teachings. And how can any other person, hopefully with morals, like pilots collect this dirty money. These people ruined a nice family neighborhood near their “Christians” by buying out the houses and turning them into vacation homes for their cohorts in crime. Many home owners lost value and, more importantly, a family neighborhood. Reluctantly, many sold to the “Christians” just to get out. Why are real Christians not out there every day protesting? They are a black mark on true Christianity and the teachings of Jesus. These people are evil gluttons “the seventh deadly sin” I hope they burn in hell.

I thought that the idea of donating money to a church was for that church to help people in need and not to keep the church hierarchy living in luxury.
Yeah, that’s part of it. It is to support those who are ministering to those who are being ministered to, but that is usually proportional to the community where they are ministering.
While they are right by South Coast Plaza, I don’t recall that the surrounding neighborhoods are particularly upscale.
Remember though, to put this in perspective is that the reason this is news is because this is NOT the norm. If it was typical of non-profit Christian broadcasters it would not particularly be news.
And they are behind an enclosure. Not just anyone can go in. Shameful, looks like a castle - a really ugly one at that. Look at the expensive cars parked in the parking lot too.

ive heard one thing former drug kingpins do when the market gets saturated where they are at, it becomes too dangerous, or they simply want to retire, they start a ministry, a perfect vehicle to launder their drug proceeds, to convince themselves all their bad past deeds dont matter because they are now “saved”, and to make even MORE money taking advantage of tax laws, and peoples need to belong to communities and some sense of tradition and religion. hmm maybe i should start my own ministry! but then again i am a good honest upstanding citizen that would never take advantage of peoples beliefs so i could by myself an uberjet, ud have to have a criminal mindset to go into that business, uhhh religion i mean

TBN exists on VOLUNTARY contributions, not coerced taxation. Many churches DO accept direct cash payments from government “to run local welfare programs.” But such acceptance is actually IMMORAL, because government money is dirty money, i.e, is stolen, since it is collected by FORCE. Therefore, no church should have anything to do with such a program.
I’m told that Catholic Charities alone, receive over ONE BILLION dollars a year from Washington to “run welfare programs.” Many protestant churches also receive cash subsidies. They should be publicized and shamed for it. The churches THEMSELVES are mixing church and state in order to collect extra money.
Otherwise, TBN appears to me to be a “clean” operation, with no coercion being used anywhere in its operations. Nobody is forced to work for TBN, to believe their philosophies, or appear on their shows, or send money to them.

They abuse the system and waste tax dollars everyday. Maybe we should “take the plank out of our own eye” before we complain about the “splinter in our brother’s eye”? TBN is a private religious organization and they have the absolute right to spend their money as they deem appropriate. The government is wasting PUBLIC money that was pilfered involuntarily from citizens…that is a much bigger issues than a religious organization buying a private jet.
