OC Watchdog ~ Your tax dollars at work.

And the highest-paid city council is….Anaheim’s!

October 4th, 2008, 7:00 am · 9 Comments · posted by Teri Sforza, Register staff writer

It is good, when voting on doubling your council members’ salaries, to know what *other* councilmembers in *other* cities are making.

Mission Viejo - which will vote on raising council compensation from $500 to $1,000 a month on Monday - surveyed about two of every three Orange County cities to see what they pay.

  • Anaheim, the county’s second-largest city (population 334,425), came out on top, paying its councilmembers $1,500 a month, plus expenses and a $600 monthly car allowance.
  • Buena Park, population 79,664, came out at No. 2, paying $1,087 a month plus expenses.
  • Tustin, population 69,665, came out at No. 3, paying $947.90 a month, plus expenses.
  • Costa Mesa, population 109,809, came in at No. 4., paying $952 a month.

The most-poorly paid?

  • It’s not actually in MV’s report, but the winner - loser? - is Villa Park, whose council makes zip, zilch, nada.
  • Santa Ana, population 340,024, where councilmembers get a salary of $125 per month, plus expenses.
  • San Juan Capistrano, La Palma and Laguna Woods pay $300 a month plus expenses.
  • Laguna Niguel and San Clemente pay $400 a month plus expenses.

The Watchdog had a great deal of fun perusing the ”Survey of Compensation for City Council Members Representing Cities Throughout Orange County.” We copy the report below, for your full perusal, with thanks to the staffers at Mission Viejo for compiling it. Click on the highlighted title to go to the source document.

WOW, I thought they got paid alot more than that. Only $1500 a month? Do they hold other jobs for the city?

  • Brian says:

Why a car allowance? Is this taxable as regular income? If not, they should receive this as salary. Anaheim counselors don’t have to worry as they are really employed by developers.

  • GOP rank and file member says:

Why is that analysis missing the payments and salary schedule for Aliso Viejo?

  • Art Pedroza says:

Santa Ana City Council Members also get a $600 monthly car allowance. Our Mayor, Miguel Pulido, also gets to use a hybrid car for free, which is provided to him by the South Coast Air Quality Management District (he sits on their board). And he STILL gets a car allowance from the City of Santa Ana.

It should also be noted that many of our Council Members make a lot of money serving on various commissions and boards. Every time they sit on a city commission they are paid. And some of these boards pay hundreds of dollars per month, such as the O.C. Sanitation District’s Board.

So no, our Council Members are not poorly paid.

You have identified only the first layer of the onion. Dig deeper and you will find questionable practices in their unilateral authority to grant benefits and pay increases to themselves as well as lucrative “consulting” arrangements with other public agencies in the county solely based on their elected positions and political influence. Imagine how much bigger these issues become when you move up to regional, state, and national levels.

  • anaheim says:

Wait a minute, Don’t they travel to Japan and other sister cities who pays for that? What about council aids how much that does that cost the tax payers. Do they get full benefits? Take Galloway the same person Ms Gin is Galloways council assistance and also works for her at her business,

  • Bizatch says:

Please add in perks and bribes when you compare their total salary

  • Go-Angels!! says:

Art Pedroza has it right. Needs to dig deeper.

a good number of these electeds get between $20K to $40k/year… depends on how many regional boards/commissions they sit on. Usually $100/meeting.

Check out the mayor of Irvine!

  • dumbed down says:

I think we should fire all the city council members, and have peace and love communes.
